National Malaria Control Programme was introduced
in the state
1958 :
National Malaria Eradication Programme in 1958
with an objective to eradicate the disease. The
anti parasitic as well as anti vector measures
undertaken under National Malaria Eradication
Programme has brought down the malaria incidence
to a very low level (4008 cases in 1962) with
no death. However in subsequent years reversal
of the trend was observed.
1976 :
1.2million cases were reported in the state, which
was a drastic increase.
1977 :
Since the implementation of MPO malaria incidence
has shown a cyclical trend with increasing and
declining trend at an interval of 7-10 years.
Five zonal entomological cells were also established
in the state as per the guidelines of MPO. Similarly
for operational research also a field station
of Malaria Research Centre was set up at Nadiad
in 1983
1996 :
As per the recommendations of the expert committee
Malaria Action Programme is implemented in the
state.
1997 :
Activities under Enhanced Malaria Control Project
with World Bank assistance have also been initiated
and being implemented. A total population of 95
lakh population in 11 tribal districts are covered
under this project.
2003 :
The programme has been renamed as National Vector
Borne Disease Control Programme and all vector
borne diseases like malaria, Filariasis, dengue
etc. have been brought under the ambit of this
programme.
