The State has been certified as "Guineaworm Disease Free" by the WHO and is also on the verge of eradication of Yaws, a crippling disease of the tribal poor population. |

An innovative "Kalyan chhab" scheme was introduced in July 1999 in Gujarat state. The welfare basket under this scheme caters to the needs of common rural people and provides chlorine tab., ORS packets, Iron Folic Acid Tab. and Condoms - the basic need for prevention and control of waterborne epidemics and for promoting the health status of the people. The scheme covers all fair price shops in the entire state. |

To strengthen preventive and control measures for Leptospirosis State has provided funds of Rs. 100 Lakhs in the year 2001-2002, Rs. 49.22 Lakhs in the year 2002-2003 and Rs. 30.00 Lakhs in the year 2003-2004 for improvement and strengthening of laboratory surveillance, early detection of cases, and to ensure effective and early treatment in treatment centers. State has been able to reduce mortality from 24% in 1997 to 15.82% in 2003. |

the State provided Rs. 5 Lakhs for strengthening and further surveillance activities for prevention of plague during the year 2003-2004. |

The State has set an example in timely preparedness for natural disasters by organizing a comprehensive rapid response and providing medical relief measures during the devastating earthquake of 26th January 2001. The State provided medical care and relief to more than 1,66,000 injured cases and has been working to ensure rehabilitation and follow up medical care to severely injured people. It has indeed been an exemplary organized and co-ordinated massive medical relief operation witnessed in the history of the state. |

To prevent waterborne and water-related diseases, medical teams are deployed in the remotest areas and temporary hospitals are being established. A contingency plan for diseases surveillance, "Operation Health" was implemented from June 2001 to December 2001 in order to strengthened disease surveillance and get early warning signals to initiate a rapid response including health and medical emergency relief for prevention and control of epidemic diseases. |

Medical relief measures have been provided successfully to meet all health and medical needs in the scarcity affected areas during 2003-2004. Special health and medical care provided to more than 25 lakhs labourers itself denotes state health and family welfare department's strong determination and its commitment to the people. |

Additional protective vaccines to protect against occurrence of Meningococcal Meningitis and Yellow fever are provided to the Haj Pilgrims and other people who are destined to migrate to African countries respectively. |

Efforts are further being made to strengthen surveillance, preparedness and capacity building in various health and medical areas. Communication and skills of manpower will be further promoted to ensure proactive preventive and control measures with improved community participation to reduce morbidity and mortality and further improve the health status of the people of state. |
