Sentinel Surveillance:

Gujarat State is the only State in the country who is able to stabilize the epidemic since 1999, ie. Prevalence of HIV in High Risk groups (Sexually Transmitted Diseases Patients) as well as in low risk groups (Ante Natal Clinic Attendees) is not increasing as shown in sentinel surveillance conducted every year.

This was eleventh year of regular STD Sentinel Surveillance and seventh year of regular ANC Sentinel Surveillance in Gujarat state. Female patients attending Gynecology Department with the confirmed pregnancy were included in the samples as per guideline of NACO. This year round of Sentinel surveillance was carried out from 1st July, 04 to 20th October 2004.

Blood Safety Programme:
The collections of blood, by blood banks supported by the Gujarat State AIDS Control Society and Gujarat Council for Blood Transfusion have increased considerably since 1994. In 2004 Gujarat collected highest number of blood units in the country.

The total blood collection during the year 1994 was 104192 which has increased to 513203 in the year 2005 which was the highest in the whole country.

Voluntary Blood Collection

Before 1993, Voluntary collection in Gujarat was comparatively high, but due to misconception that by donating blood people can contract HIV/AIDS Voluntary donation rates came down to 33.69% in 1998, which has increased to 61.05% during the current year which is second highest in the country after west Bengal. The percentage of collection through voluntary donations is increasing every year due to concerted efforts of the State.

Year-wise Voluntary Blood Collection in Gujarat

Under Blood Safety programme we celebrate the Blood Donation Day to increase awareness for blood donation & facilitation of persons who have donated blood for 100 times. This year we have facilitated women who have donated blood more than 25 times at state level & between 14-24 times at district level. To promote this we developed IEC material like Posters, Banners & Pamphlets.

Gujarat is first in the whole country as far as awareness generation for blood donations is concerned.

The below graph shows that the HIV prevalence as well as other blood transfusion transmitted diseases like Hepatitis B and Syphilis which are also transmitted sexually are almost constant among blood donors in last five years.

The data collected as a part of Behavioural Surveillance Survey in 2000-01 by National AIDS Control Organisation by an independent agency showed comparatively high number of males were having sex with non-regular partners, but condom use in such acts was among the highest in the country as can be seen in following table.
