Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara have their own local health Authority and enforcing staff with laboratory facilities. It more often works as per the directives of the Food Health Authority and Government.

Rural Areas :
The State of Gujarat is divided into 23 circles having separate local Health Authorities under Food & Drugs Control Administration. Team of 6 senior Food Inspectors and 61 Food Inspectors are keeping vigil on manufacturers and sellers of food articles and executing duties assigned to them as per the directives of Commissioner and Local Health Authorities.
Functions :
1. To carry out inspection and grant license under PFA act to food manufactures/Dealer/Wholesales/retailers/hawker and to prosecute unlicensed manufacturer/sellers.
2. To look after sanitation & hygiene of food units and people working in it.
3. To draw as and when required food samples and to prosecute responsible persons selling/manufacturing/adulterated/misbranded foods in the respective courts.
4. To educate people regarding the menace of food poisoning and to enable them to take the precautions to prevent it.
5. To provided information regarding PFA act 1954 to the needed and to help people to understand the act better.
6. To prepare sampling programme and plan of action to cover all food articles based on season basis and accordingly samples are collected.x
(a) strict vigil throughout the year is kept on milk, edible oils, species, sweets, bakery products, mineral water and packaged drinking water, pan masala, Gutkha, Confectioneries, namkeens and processed food products.
(b) In summer more priority is given to cold drinks, fruit juices, Mango Juice (mango milk shake), Ice cream, Ice candies, Khoa and Khoa based sweets.
7. To provide food security to the VVIP as per the directives of Government.
8. Food samples collected by the Food Inspectors are analyzed at the 3 Government laboratories. These laboratories also analyze the samples send by the businessman's/consumers with necessary fees.
