Introduction

One of the most important event in the annals of India was the bifurcation of the erstwhile Bombay State into Gujarat and Maharashtra in the year 1960. People welcomed the new State with crackers, musical rhythms combined with Dandiya Ras with great joy and enthusiasm, welcoming a new era. Gujarat with its meager capacity of manpower started its administration with the capital at Ahmedabad. However, progress in industry coupled with increase in population, traffic etc. made our genius administrators shift the capital from Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar on May 1, 1970. Dr. Jivraj Mehta was the first Chief Minister of Gujarat, representing the Congress political party and Mr. Narendra Modi is the present Chief Minister representing the Bharathiya Janata Party of Gujarat State.

Initially, the Department was known as Drugs Control Administration having its office at Civil Hospital Compound, Asarwa, Ahmedabad headed by Director. Dr. B.V. Patel. an eminent personality in the field of Pharmacy and the first Director. The Drugs Control Administration office shifted to Apana Bazar, Lal Darwaja, Ahmedabad due to some administrative difficulties. With the increase in number of Pharmaceutical industrial units, increase in staff, work and administrative problems compelled the shift of the office to Gandhinagar in 1984 having its office at Dr. Jivraj Mehta Bhavan, Block No. 8, 1st Floor, Sachivalaya, Tel. No. 079-3220176, 079-3221170, Tel. Fax - 079-21170.

Mr. H.G. Koshia, M. Pharm is the Commissioner of this Administration. He is also holding the charge of Joint Commissioner (Drug) and Licencing & Controlling Authority under Drug & Cosmetics Act & Rules there under.
